The World Alliance for Patient Safety initiated work on the second Global Patient Safety Challenge in January 2007. The initiative, "Safe Surgery Saves Lives", aims to improve the safety of surgical care around the world. By focusing attention on surgery as a public health issue, the WHO is recognizing the importance of improving the safety of surgical care in all Member States.

SIMPATIE stands for Safety Improvement for Patients In Europe and was a European funded project aided by a grant by DG Health & Consumer Protection. The project lasted two years and was carried out in between February 2005 and February 2007. The project aimed to facilitate free movement of people and services by developing EU-wide commonality and transparency in methodology on patient safety in healthcare institutions, as a multidisciplinary effort.

On behalf of the millions of Americans for whom many of the nation's largest corporations and public agencies buy health benefits, The Leapfrog Group aims to: - Reduce preventable medical mistakes and improve the quality and affordability of health care. - Encourage health providers to publicly report their quality and outcomes so that consumers and purchasing organizations can make informed health care choices. - Reward doctors and hospitals for improving the quality, safety and affordability of health care. - Help consumers reap the benefits of making smart health care decisions.

Patient safety is the primary concern of all surgeons and the work of our Patient Safety Board is central to creating a safe environment for surgical patients. The board will maintain and improve patient safety through research and evidence-based education of surgeons.
